Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log:  Saturday-Sunday, March 27-28, 1999:  M. Allen
27 - 28 Mar 99, 9:30 am - 10:00 am, Cameron Pass.  Participated in the
overnight field session of the Advanced Mountaineering class.  On Sunday
morning, after a snowy Saturday and a windy Saturday night, we noticed a
large avalanche path on South Diamond Peak.  The avalanche scoured the
slope all the way to the ground, leaving a path at least 200 yards wide.
I think there's a lesson here:  even though the snowpack is isothermal
in many places, there is still a weak layer close to the ground in other
places, and in those places caution is still necessary.
