Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Saturday, January 10, 2004: T. Thibodeau

I arrived at the Green Rock trail head at about 10:00 am.  I skied the Libby Creek Trail and made some turns at the Ladies Down.  I then skied to Bear Lake and down Sally Creek to the Snowy Mountain Lodge and back to Green Rock.  The skies were clear with light winds.  The temperature was in the high 20s to mid 30s.

At 10:00 AM, 104 vehicles were below the cattle guard at Green Rock and 32 between the guard and Snowy Mountain Lodge.

The snow stake on the Barber Lake Trail registered 28” of snow.  I dug a snow pit at the top of the ladies downhill on the Libby Creek Trail (NW, NE Section 24, T16N, R79W).  The pit was on an approximately 10 degree slope and oriented northeast.  Snow depth in the pit was 42 inches.  From the surface to the 8” mark there was unconsolidated snow that had fallen within the last few days.  From 8”-14” there was a layer of fist snow.  From 14”-28” there was a layer of four finger snow.  From 28”-42” (ground) there was a layer of loosely consolidated depth hoar.  When I conducted a shovel shear test, the snow column broke at the 8”, 14” and 28” levels.  Snow stability would appear to be moderate, and I would advise caution on steep terrain.
