Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Sunday, January 25, 2004: T. Thibodeau

I arrived at the Green Rock trail head at about 10:00 am. Brooklyn Lake and then made turns above Glacier Lakes. There was intermittent snow storms mixed with sunny skies and strong wind gusts. The temperature was in the high teens.

At 10:00 AM, 35 vehicles were below the cattle guard at Green Rock and 12 between the guard and Snowy Mountain Lodge. I dug a snow pit at the top of Glacier Lakes on a SW facing slope with about a 20% pitch (SE, SE, Section 3, T16N, R79W).  Snow depth in the pit was 46 inches.  There was 4” of new powder on top of a firm base.  From 4”-14” there was a layer of one finger snow.  From 14”-35” there was a layer of four finger snow.  At 35” there was an ice layer.  From 35”-42” there was another layer of four finger snow.  From 42” to 46” (ground) there was a layer of loosely consolidated depth hoar.  When I conducted a shovel shear test, the snow column broke at the 14”, 35” and 42” levels.
