Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log:  Saturday, January 8, 2005:  T. Thibodeau
I arrived at the Green Rock trailhead at about 11:00 am. I skied the
Libby Creek Trail and then skied the Barber Lake Trail to the Barber
Lake Road and back to Green Rock Trailhead. The skies were overcast
with intermittent snow and light winds. The temperature was in the
mid 20s.

At 11:00 AM, 87 vehicles were parked at Green Rock and 34 between
Green Rock and the Snowy Mountain Lodge.

The snow stake on the Barber Lake Trail registered 27” of snow.
I dug a snow pit at the top of the Ladies Downhill on the Libby
Creek Trail (NW, NE Section 24, T16N, R79W). The pit was on an
approximately 10 degree slope and oriented northeast. Snow depth
in the pit was 39 inches. From the surface to the 14” mark there
was unconsolidated snow that had fallen within the last few days.
From 14”-21” there was a layer of four finger snow. There then was
a 1” ice layer. From 22”-31” there was a layer of three finger snow.
From 31”-39” (ground) there was a layer of loosely consolidated depth
hoar. When I conducted a shovel shear test, the snow column broke
at the 14”, 21” and 31” levels.
