Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log:  Sunday, February 25, 2007:  J. Pohl and R. Howell
Date: 02/25/2007
Location: Green Rock Picnic Ground -- Potholes Trail
Patrollers, etc: Bob Howell and Josef Pohl, both MBNSP, Aldo the blunder dog.

Description: We arrived at the trail head at approximately 10 AM, taking a car count on the way up. See below. We proceeded to ski from the Green Rock parking area up the potholes trail.  The trail was well marked with blue flagging.  Bob added some in areas we deemed to be in need of more obvious marking. (Such as across open areas.) Some of the lower open areas had been fairly scoured of snow. We met one person and dog who had skied up earlier.  He was on his return trip. The snow conditions were a light dusting of new (falling) snow on top of a sun baked/wind blown base.  The base was stable though so we did not break through.  The conditions in more heavily forested areas were better.  The lower section of this trail
was fairly well traversed by skiers.  The upper stretch was not quite as well travelled however there had been several skiers on it since the last major snowstorm.  We skied to a turn-off above the road (the turn we took would have taken us to Brooklyn Lake and may have intersected the North Fork Trail.  This last part has not been verified. We followed the trail for approximately another mile.  Ate lunch after a large open area and the returned on the same trail to where the turn-off was.  We took the other direction and came upon the road just above St. Albans chapel and the Ranger Station.  We returned to Green Rock via the road.

Miscellany:  The upper part of the trail had been traversed by a lone snowmobile.  There was, in addition to the blue flagging, some orange flagging.  It was not very consistent and it was not clear who put it up. But it had been put up recently.  It was not evident how much traffic the upper part of the trail was getting but it was getting some.  The trail was fairly well packed under a fresh dusting of snow.  But this could have been from errant snow machines.
