LOCAL AVALANCHE COURSES FOR 2026

This coming winter we plan to run 2 NSP Level-1 Avalanche courses.
There are no prerequisites except fitness and skills required to travel over snow, uphill and downhill, under your own power, using skis or snowshoes.
The dates are as follows:

Course 1 (open to University of Wyoming students and employees)
Classroom sessions: 6-10 pm Tuesday 3 Feb, Friday 6 Feb, Monday 9 Feb
Field sessions: 8 am - 4 pm Saturday 7 Feb and Sunday 8 Feb
You must register for the course through the University of Wyoming Outdoor Program.

Course 2 (open to the public)
Classroom sessions: 6-10 pm Tuesday 10 Feb, Friday 13 Feb, Monday 16 Feb
Field sessions: 8 am - 4 pm Saturday 14 Feb and Sunday 15 Feb

You must submit an application and be accepted.
For NSP members, the cost for each course is $100. This fee covers equipment costs and instructor expenses and helps support the continuing education required for instructors to maintain NSP certification. Course fees do not pay for instructors' time; they teach as volunteers.

The textbook for the course is Staying Alive in Avalanche Terrain (3rd edition), by Bruce Tremper. Read it before attending the course.

If you're interested in participating, please contact Myron Allen allen@uwyo.edu .

I know several patrollers are interested in becoming Level-1 Avalanche Instructors. If you're one of these people-and you have completed NSP's Instructor Development Course and at least an NSP Level-1 Avalanche course-please let me know, so we can weave you into the instructor mentoring process.
