Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Saturday, February 28, 1998: M. Allen
28 Feb 98, 8:30 am - 6:00 pm, Snowy Range Ski Area. Served a duty day
with the Snowy Range Ski Patrol. At the end of the day (about 4:45 pm),
Jerry Hamann and I responded to radio traffic concerning an injured
snowmobiler in the Snowy Range. After contact with Curt Ord (USFS)
and Neil Mathison (Sheriff's Office), we returned to the ski area, then
to Green Rock, which was the staging area. By that time, Andrea Kern
from the Centennial ambulance service had reached Green Rock and had
intercepted the injured person, a woman of about 40 who complained of
chest injuries after being hit by a snowmobile. We remained at Green
Rock until the Laramie ambulance left for Ivinson Hospital with the patient.
REMARK: It's not clear to me that we made ourselves as helpful as
possible in this event. Nordic patrollers who are prepared for possibly
extended backcountry patient care might be most useful if they show up
at the most likely staging area (in this case Green Rock) as soon as
possible. That way they could be ready for possible snowmobile taxi
to the injured party. They may even arrive before other rescue personnel,
who may be less prepared for remote or extended backcountry care and
patient stabilization. It seems to me that there are many possible ways
to get a rescue toboggan on the way to the patient, but the rapid arrival
of people with medical and backcountry skills is of paramount importance.
