Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Saturday, December 12, 1998: T. Thibodeau
I skied with new patroller Erin Schanzenback.  We arrived at the
Green Rock trailhead at about 10:00.  During the course of the
day we skied the Libby Creek Loop once, the Green Rock cutoff
and the upper part of the Barber Lake Road.  The temperature
was in the low to mid 30s with clear skies and light winds.
No vehicles were present at the bottom of the Barber Lake Road,
the Corner Mountain trail head, or the Little Laramie trail head.
The were approximately 40 vehicles at the Green Rock trail head.
During the course of the day we encountered approximately eight skiers.

The snow gauge at the beginning of the upper Barber Lake loo
registered 16 inches of snow.  We dug a snow pit at the firs
prominent overlook on the Libby Creek Loop (NE, SE, NW, Sec. 24, T16N, R79W).
The orientation of the slope was south south east.  Snow depth in the pit
was 17 inches.  The bottom six inches of the snow pack was loosely
consolidated depth hoar with highly faceted grains (>4mm), there was
then a 1 inch ice layer, there was then a four inch layer of four
finger snow, then a 2 inch layer of one finger snow, on the surface
there were four inches of unmetamorphosed new snow.  Winds were
mild and there appear to be no snow loading at this location.
A shovel shear test revealed shear plains at the ice layer and
the one finger layer.
