Sunday, April 16, 2000. Skied from Green Rock out onto the Libby Creek Trail, then continued up the Libby Creek drainage to the Libby Flats Observation point at 10,850 ft. Returned to Green Rock by way of Towner Lake Road and Little Brooklyn Lake. Snow conditions in the morning were nice down low, thanks to a 2-3 inch addition on Saturday. Temperatures rapidly climbed into the high 40's and 50's, leaving lower snows soppy wet. Conditions up higher on the flats were starting to develop wind crusts. Met a group of 19 backcountry skiers/climbers who were headed toward the Medicine Bow Peak area for the week. Data: Green Rock / Barber Lake Snow Stake at 40 inches No snowpit dug, base is a solid metamorphed block on southern aspects, presenting a smooth running surface for the new snowfall. Crust formation of the new snowfall will lead to thin-slab avalanche potential. I skied several steep slopes in the Libby Creek drainage without any observed slides, but the potential is there.
