Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Sunday, December 12, 1999:  T. Thibodeau, J. Moncecchi, M. Allen
FROM:           Todd T.

SUBJECT:        Log of patrol activities on 12-12-99

I skied with a party of six, including new patroller
Johanna Moncecchi, Mariah Moncecchi, Ben Roth, Myron Allen,
and Adel.  We arrived at the Green Rock trail head at about
10:00 am.  We skied up the Pot Holes Corridor to Brooklyn
Lake and returned by the same route.  The temperature was
in the low to mid 20s with clear skies and moderate winds.
During the course of the day we encountered no other skiers.

At 10:00 am two vehicles were present at the bottom of the
Barber Lake Road.  No vehicles were present at the Corner
Mountain trail head.  One vehicle was at the Little Laramie
trail head.  There were approximately 26 vehicles at the
Green Rock trail head.

We dug a snow pit at the trail head for the Glacier Lakes
Trail (adjacent to the Brooklyn Lake Campground).  The pit
was on a less than 5 degree slope and was oriented almost
due south.  Snow depth in the pit was 38 cm.  The surface
temperature (T) of the snow was -4 Celsius (C).  At 20
centimeters (cm) the T raised to -2 C.  The T was 0 C at
the ground at 38 cm.  From the surface to the 9 cm mark
there was unconsolidated snow that had fallen within the
last 24 hours.  From 9-14 cm there was a layer of two finger
snow, with a crust layer at 14 cm.  From 14-38 cm there
was small faceted (<2 mm)depth hoar.  Due to the limited
depth of the snow pack we did not conduct a shovel shear
test.
