Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Saturday, February 1, 2003:  Dino, Lori, Johannah Moncecchi
Dino, Lori & Johannah:  2/1, 1030 - 1630.

Started at GR and skied up Sally Creek, continued on the S fork, went
due S  to the meadow E of Bear Lake and back to the N fork of Libby Ck.
and followed it to the switch back on the Libby Creek Trail.  We had
lunch then skied down the trail and up out of the hole back to GR.  The
weather was warm, but quite windy.  We saw a party of a Dad w/a teenage
daughter and friend who were going to snowshoe in the Libby Creek Trail
area and overnight in a tent.  Met a couple going up Sally Ck who skied
toward Bear Lake w/ us; at Skinny Dip Hill we met a party of three who
went N.  On the Libby Ck Tl we met a party of two and a party of  five
snowshoers.  Three of the five parties were from CO!

The skiing was nice; Libby Ck Tl was very fast.  The snow stake had 22
in.  There was about 5 in. of newer snow on a soft crust that mostly
supported you.  Underneath the crust was unconsolidated snow that didn't
support anything and we saw this at practically all locations- we didn't
dig a pit, we were doing some orienteering.  We also had some "snow
plates" collapse (whump) as we skied.  Given the observations and the
recent occurrances I would say that the avalanche danger is more than
considerable and may be classified as severe.  Has anyone been up where
the snowmobilers go and noticed if they are riding steeper terrain and if
it is releasing or not?
