Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Wednesday-Thursday, March 26-27,
2003: J. Hamann
At 11pm on Wed. March 26, contacted by Albany County Sheriff's Office to assist in
the search for a pair of overdue skiers in the Chimney Park area. Party of four
had begun skiing from the Chimney Park parking area about 4:30pm. Two adults
became separated from two teenage males in the vicinity of the lower Jelm View
Loop. The adults returned to the parking area but the teens did not.
At least four inches of new snow had fallen through the evening.
Began search via snow machine at 1am March 27 with two ACSO personnel and another
volunteer familiar with the area. At 1:50am the two teens were located, huddled together
under a tree just a few feet off the Jelm View Loop, approximately 1/4 mile west
of the principle trail junction which is south of the reservoir dam. GPS mark at
recovery point was (NAD27 CONUS) LAT/LON N41d04m08.9s/W106d06m42.0s
or UTM 13T 0406601E 4546817N. Teens were cold but in good spirits. Recovery was
timely as another wave of blizzard-like conditions began moving in to the area.
Transported teens to parking lot and recovered remainder of search team, returned to
Laramie at 4am.
