Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Sunday, December 1, 2002: A. Foianini
I started from Green Rock parking lot, skied Libby Creek trail to the top of the hill, backtracked,
and skied Barber Lake Trail all the way to the bottom. Traffic at the parking lot was very light
for a weekend day; I counted only 15 vehicles with trailers and 6 vehicles without. Unfortunately,
the ample parking did not prevent one wayward soul from parking his rig right in the middle of
the no trailer parking (I guess we all know what an extra 20 feet up the trail means to
some folks). The snow was very good at Green Rock 11.5 inches of packed powder at the
measuring stick but deteriorated significantly on the lower half of the trail. The snow
went from firm, yet delicate fluff to ice and crust that would make bobsledders drool right
about the point when the trail dives off the main road. Be prepared to contend with icy ruts,
bumps, and inconsistent snow from this point on. There were also several large patches of
barren earth after the trail meets up with the river, including one rather nasty patch at
the bottom of an icy hill along the river. It is important to note that these barren patches
are not in the least bit skiable; they are, quite literally, 7-30 feet of exposed dirt and
rock covering the entirety of the trail. USE CAUTION!!
