Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Saturday, February 5, 2005:
J. Hamann
Traveled with the University of Wyoming Outdoor Adventure Program
Avalanche Level I class for their first on-snow day. Began at 9:30,
leaving the Green Rock Picnic Area Parking with six skiers, six
snowshoers and one dog. Travelled to the top of the Women's Downhill, at the
first overlook of the Libby Creek Trail. The group divided into two subgroups,
each of which prepared a mock avalanche accident scene (entailing two to
three burials, including avalanche transceiver locatable and probe-able victims).
The subgroups exchanged scenes to simulate recovery exercises. Continued
afterward with discussion and demonstration of various avy probe gear,
evaluation of snow stability via snowpit analysis, and provided lots of
practice with avalanche transceiver use. Departed the area at 3pm to return
to the parking lot.
Weather was calm, sunny, with air temperatures in the mid 20's to low 30's throughout
the day. Clear skies were followed by some cloud build-up to the west by
later afternoon. Snowpack demonstrated a significant sun, melt-freeze layer
on the surface, which may lead to a significant weak bonding layer with future
snowfalls. Observed several parties on skis and snowshoes, navigating the Libby
Creek Trail throughout the day.
