Barber Lake trail
Skied with Lucas Shaw, Nadya Kuzmina, and Aldo the dog.
This was a short day as I was due to be at the Snowy Range Ski Area for
lift evac training. The temperature was mid 20's. Light breeze. Sunny.
No official car count. 5 trucks (no trailers) at Green Rock.
A lot of people were parked randomly along hwy 130 to cut christmas trees.
A few boarders trying to hitch a ride.
Snow stake at 28.5 inches.
I had stopped in to talk to Allison at the Centennial VIS. (She will be
the volunteer there at least on Saturdays until March.) She asked that we
be on the lookout for malevolent tree cutters. (ie people cutting
christmas trees right along the trail/road) I did not find any.
The trail was well packed at the top (to the first road secion).
It was sparse after that and we broke trail most of the way. Someone had
run a groomer over the top part it would appear. (No sign that it was
motorized but there was a corrugation in the snow.)
There were a few sun baked thin spots towards the bottom before the second
section on Barber Lake Road.
No one was on the trail. One skier at the Green Rock parking lot.
A note about radio communication: I made several attempts to transmit but
eveidently none made it through from anywhere on the trail. Allison was
on Spruce Mountain repeater. I had one click from Pole Mountain but that
was it. She evidently did not hear any of my attempts. I heard no radio
traffic that day.
Ended day at SRSA for lift evac training. In typical fashion the training
started late and finished in the dark.
