Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Wednesday, January 4, 2006:
Mark Vandervort
A friend and I skied in the Greenrock area today. I stopped
by
Myron's house for a radio but found none. I'll give him a ring to
make
sure I'm not looking in the wrong place. At any rate, we
unfortunately
found the Greenrock parking area unplowed as of yet and so we parked
just below the turnaround. There were 8 other vehicles parked.
At 9 am the temp was 19 deg F and the snow-stake measured at 41
inches.
We
dug two snow pits at the top of the "Ladies Downhill" just off the
Libby Creek trail on a 27 degree slope. The snow was around 40
inches
deep with a significant ice crust layer about 27 inches deep in the
snowpack. A shovel shear test indicated several weak layers in
the
snowpack (two very clean shears), however a compression test indicated
low energy in the snowpack. The temperature of the snowpack
was 29 deg
F near the ground and 21 degrees twelve inches below the
surface of the
snow. Thus, there was a 8 degree Fahrenheit temperature
gradient over
approximately 35 inches of snow. Snow crystals consisted of
mostly
rounded crystals.
A rutschbock test provided failure after one hard jump.
The failed slab did not slide easil! y down into the snowpit.
After that - we skied some great powder. Ye-ha!
