Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Sunday, April 2, 2006: T.
Thibodeau
I arrived at the Green Rock trail head about 10:00 AM. I skied the Potholes trail
to Brooklyn Lake, yo-yo skied an southeast facing ridge below Glacier Lakes and
then skied the Potholes trail back to Green Rock. In the morning the temperature
was in the mid 30s with clear skies and strong winds. In the early afternoon the
skies became overcast with stronger winds and the temperature increase to the high 40s.
At 10:00 AM, there were no vehicles at Corner Mountain or Little Laramie trailheads.
There were 52 vehicles between the cattle guard and Green Rock parking area. There
were 6 vehicles in the skier parking lot and 22 vehicles between there and the Snowy
Mountain Lodge. I did not encounter any skiers on the trails, but did run into
Ted Sprague in the Green Rock parking lot.
I dug a snow pit on a southeast facing ridge between Brooklyn Lake and the Glacier
Lakes(NW, NE, Sec 10, T79W, R16N). The slope was located at 10,800 feet and
had a pitch of about 15%. Snow depth in the pit was 38 inches. There was 4”
layer of loosely consolidated depth hoar at the ground level, the remainder of
the snow pack was a layer of one finger snow. There were no discernable layers
within the snow pack.
