Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log: Sun. January 25, 2009: B.
Howell
(with L. Finley-Blasi and E. Ostlind)
On Sunday January 25, 2009 Bob Howell, Lee Finley-Blasi, and Emiline
Ostlind skied the lower part of the Potholes route. Joe Pohl had
equipment problems but hiked to the snow stake at the top of the Libby
Creek trail and, using a tape measure and marker we had brought for the
purpose, re-marked the inch indicators which were fading badly. The
snow depth was 43 inches. The lower section of the stake will need to
be re-marked after the snow melts.
When we arrived at the Green Rock area we found that a search for three
missing snowmobilers was underway. The search covered too wide an area
for us to be of much use on skis but we offered our help and stayed in
contact with the Sheriff's office in case they did need us. Because of
that and other commitments we made only a relatively short patrol up the
Potholes route to between the first and second esker. There were no
tracks on most of the route and the blue flagging was becoming sparse.
We did meet one skier who caught up with us close to the first esker.
Because of the other issues we didn't conduct car counts or attempt to
dig a snow pit.
On return to Laramie we notified the other members of MBNSP to be on
alert for possible activation in the search. In the end the
snowmobilers were located late the next day, without MBNSP having been
activated.
