I departed the SRSA at 1:30 Sunday as it was too cold to take the dog & I only had to do a few evaluations. I grabbed her at 2PM and headed out from the cabin up Old Rainbow Valley Lodge Road and hooked in to Headquarter Trail. We skied that to Barber Lake Road and crossed to the Corner Mountain Trails via the Aspen Campground. The higher you got the better the snow. I forwent skins as I felt if I needed to climb, it was more prudent to sidestep and pack the trail as I went. There was 1 car from Albany County in the Corner Mountain Parking lot. We went back and finished Headquarter Loop to the visitor center, no cars, but one unopened bottle of Smirnoff Ice left on the ground. Unfortunately it was frozen.
Overall the
snowpack in
Headquarter loop was thin, 3-6 inches, but definitely skiable.
Corner
mountain was better with 6-12” overall. Bottom line, we had fun
as
long as we were moving. Temp was averaging Zero.
