Medicine Bow Nordic Ski Patrol
Patrol Log:  Sun. February 20, 2011:  Bob Howell

On Sunday Feb. 20 Bob Howell skied a short patrol up the Potholes Route
to the first esker. The snow conditions were good with ~7 inches of
fresh powder, but the weather was bad with high (and increasing) winds
combined with light snow. By early afternoon the winds were noticable
even in the trees and conditions were approaching white-out in the open
meadows and at Green Rock. The temperature was in the mid 20's. I kept
the trip short in part because of concerns about the entrance to the
Green Rock parking lot drifting in. The lot itself had been plowed
recently.

From tracks there had been a couple skiers who had gone up the Potholes
Route earlier in day, above the low meadows, to the first location in
the woods where the trail descends sharply for a few yards then resumes
a slow steady climb. They had turned around at that point but from
partly buried tracks the route above that had been used in the last few
days. With snow intermittently covering tracks and also hiding much of
the blue flagging it was moderately difficult to follow and a number of
alternate tracks have been established, especially in the lower sections
of the route. It may need some reflagging once enough snow is off the
trees to see how much flagging is left.

While I didn't meet any skiers on the Potholes Route several groups were
heading into or out of the Libby Creek Trail while I was in the area.
